Join us on this walking tour on Menorca to explore the Camí de Cavalls walking trail. This ancient footpath circumnavigates the entire island's coast, taking in some spectacular Mediterranean scenery.

The charming Spanish island of Menorca, is one of Spain's Balaeric islands, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. Historically, the Camí de Cavalls was created for military defence of the island, but more recently it has been developed into a hiking and biking path that is perfect for those who enjoy exploring at a leisurely pace. The total distance of the path is approximately 115 miles long. Over 6 days, we will cover 6 of its stages, covering the north and south of the island.

A mini-bus will transfer us each day from the White Sands Resort to the start of our walking route and then back again at the end of the hike. Together with your Big Journey Company Tour Director, you should expect to walk approximately 6-10 miles each day and you will discover some of the most beautiful sections of this ancient route. Most the stages of the footpath are rocky underfoot - appropriate, sturdy footwear is essential.

DAY 1 - Welcome to Menorca

On arrival at Menorca-Mahón Airport [MAH], there will be three complimentary scheduled transfers to the resort. After collecting your luggage, proceed through to the arrivals hall where there will be a representative holding a Diamond Resorts Flag to welcome you and direct you to your transport.

This evening we will have a welcome drink and get together at the resort, to go over our itinerary for the days ahead with our Big Journey Tour Director.

Accommodation: White Sands Beach Club, Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca, Spain

DAY 2 - Sa Mesquida - Favaritx

Our hike today begins towards the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park, which forms the core of Menorca’s protected Unesco Biosphere Reserve. It is a natural space, located in the east of the island of Menorca, comprising S’Albufera des Grau, the island of Colom and Cape Favàritx. We will find a great diversity of environments such as wetlands, agricultural and livestock land, forests, cliffs, beaches, islets in marine areas. On the way, we will see several remains of the Spanish Civil War, such as trenches and bunkers. We will also pass two English coastal defense towers - the Sa Mesquida Tower at the beginning of the path and the Rambla Tower, which separates Sa Torreta Cove from Cala des Tamarrels.

The route ascends to the north crossing bays, headlands and the magnificent beaches of Tortuga and Cala Presili, until reaching the end of this varied itinerary in Cabo de Favaritx. The lighthouse here, built in 1922, is one of the most famous landmarks of Menorca. This is where our mini-bus will meet us and take us back to the resort.

The rest of the day and evening is at leisure.

Walking distance - approx. 9-10 miles

Accommodation: White Sands Beach Club, Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca, Spain

DAY 3 - Platges de Fornells - Binimel-la

Today's route runs along one of the best preserved sections of the island’s coast. The entire area has been declared a Site of Community Importance by the European Union, as well as being named a Special Protection Area distinction for birds. This section of Menorca is of great geological value, as there are many different natural environments and much biodiversity. Socarells are one type of vegetation present on this section and the dune systems at Tirant, Cavalleria and Binimel·là beaches include important vegetation communities. This section is also very popular with bird watchers, as it is an important zone for breeding brids, such as the fisher eagle.

If time allows, a short diversion may be possible to the interesting archaeological remains of the Roman city of Sanicera, at the tiny modern fishing port of Sanitja. Another nearby attraction that shouldn’t be missed is the Far de Cavalleria lighthouse. From the breathtaking 80 metre high cliffs, there are spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Then it is back to the resort for an evening at leisure.

Walking distance - approx. 6 miles

Accommodation: White Sands Beach Club, Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca, Spain

DAY 4 - Cami des Alocs - Cala Morell

Today's section is filled with beautiful natural contrasts, as the route crosses the Tramuntana region to the so-called 'dry Menorca'. The change between zones begins at Vall d’Algaiarens, a wooded valley, before giving way to low level vegetation at the popular bay, Cala de ses Fontanelles. Plants such as rosemary and heather are adundant, as well as the traditional Menorcan camomile, camamil·la, a plant valued for its medicinal qualities.

Following the coastline, the path leads us to Cala Morell. There is an important necropolis dating back to the Talayotic age (1,500-300 BC) on the impressive cliff face, formed by caves dug into the rock. This busy cove is also of great geological interest as it is the exact spot where the island’s two geological regions meet, the Migjorn and Tramuntana.

Our mini-bus will transfer us back to the resort. Evening at leisure.

Walking distance - approx 9-10 miles

Accommodation: White Sands Beach Club, Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca, Spain

DAY 5 - Son Saura - Cala Galdana

One of the key features of the central part of Menorca are its gorges, cutting through the island vertically, becoming deeper and wider as you head south down the island. Thanks to these gorges, the path is one of continual contrasts and an extensive range of flora is present. The route alternates between dry areas and shaded and hidden, humid patches where vegetation within the gorges is well protected from the wind.

At

Cala en Turqueta, Macarella and Algendar are three impressive gorges, each of them a habitat for oaks. Macarella and Cala Galdana are worth mentioning, the latter mouth of the Algendar gorge, one of the most important on the island.

Our mini-bus will transfer us back to the resort.  Evening at leisure.

Walking distance - approx 7 miles

Accommodation: White Sands Beach Club, Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca, Spain

DAY 6 - Cala Galdana - Sant Tomas

Today's route could be nicknamed the Gorges Path, as it crosses several of Menorca's most impressive gorges. These geological formations reward those walking this path with spectaular views and landscapes. There is a rich variety of flora and the route also offers many chances to observe birds of prey as well as water birds.

This path also provides the opportunity to observe how, at any time of year, water is transported along the most important gorges, such as Algendar, Trebalúger and Albranca. This water is the reason why the gorges are damp and aquatic vegetation exists here. Sand dune vegetation can be spotted when visiting the coves of Cala Mitjana or Cala Trebalúger. Binigaus, which is just a short distance from this path, is the location of four of Menorca’s most relevant carstic caves. The Cova des Coloms, also known as ‘the Cathedral’ is the most outstanding thanks to  its size. Near the top of the gorge is an interesting hypostyle chamber, called 'es Galliner de Madona.'

We will return to the resort and the evening at leisure.

Walking distance - approx 7-8 miles

Accommodation: White Sands Beach Club, Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca, Spain

DAY 7 - Sant Tomas - Cala en Porter & Farewell Dinner

This path crosses the low coastline located within the central part of Minorca’s south coast. Along this smooth track, the natural landscape varies very little as there are no sudden cliff walls formed by natural gorges. Plant life transforms inland; this change is evident at Sant Tomàs and Son Bou beaches where typical dune vegetation springs up.

At the easterly end of this section, the path crosses the bottom of Sa Vall gorge, offering a privileged view of the gorge’s interior. This section is ideal for admiring the beauty of Menorca’s south coast. The path runs between two important gorge areas: Sa Vall and Es Bec in the west and the Cala en Porter gorge in the east. On the sheer walls of the gorge, plants and birds compete to build their nests wherever they can get the most shelter from harsh weather.

Walking distance - approx 9-10 miles

This evening we will have a farewell dinner together at a local restaurant and a chance to catch up on the highlights of our week in Menorca.

Included meals: Dinner
Accommodation: White Sands Beach Club, Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca, Spain

DAY 8 - Farewell to Menorca

Sadly, it's the end of our Menorcan adventure. There will be three scheduled departures from the resort to Menorca-Mahón Airport [MAH].
